Early exposure to the glass artisans of Murano, who ‘freeze’ light, color, and transparency into dramatic vitreous objects, led pale blaze to contemplate form, shape, and light as commanding versions of artistic media.

In her scientific work, pale blaze was stirred by the optical and aesthetic parameters that reflective scanning electron microscopy studies presented, as well as the visualization of bio-luminescent markers using transmission microscopy. These techniques are instrumental in locating biologically active molecules either on the surface or in the interior of a cell. The illumination of an object simultaneously requires knowledge and imparts it, serving as a direct visual indicator of a function or process. This path of exploration has been deeply affecting to the artist. That journey has led, years later, to the advent of chromatically vivid liquid polymers that excitingly present themselves as an equally dynamic avenue for pale blaze to plum their luminescence and form.

pale blaze has been further influenced and inspired by the trailblazing efforts of numerous artists and scientists, whose practice focuses on the phenomenology of light in conjunction with transparent forms of material. Of note, members of the LA-centric Light and Space movement, have expanded her notion of the optical possibilities of space-age materials and technologies. In particular, Fred Eversley’s cast resin color parabolas and Larry Bell‘s rectangular light-reflecting glass forms, profoundly broaden the possibilities of how light can be captured and manipulated in aesthetically and artistically compelling ways.

Informed by, and drawn to the rigors of the investigative process - the objectivity of defining and evaluating hypothesis - the works of pale blaze are the results of continuous inquiry into dynamic and visual expressions.
